Guide
What affects the price of a dumpster rental
Two quotes for the same size can be far apart because they include different things. Here's what moves the number, so you can compare like with like.
The main factors
Size and weight
Bigger containers cost more to haul and dispose of. Each quote includes a weight allowance, and loads over it are charged by the ton after weighing.
Rental length
A set number of days is included. Each extra day is added on, so a slow project costs more than a fast one.
What's in it
Clean concrete, shingles, yard waste and mixed debris go to different places with different disposal fees.
Where you are
Distance from the company's yard and from the disposal site matters. An island address or a long drive from Lehigh can change the price.
Extras that show up on bills
Ask about each of these up front:
- Overweight charges, and the rate per ton
- Charges for mattresses, tires or appliances
- A trip charge if the truck can't place the container (blocked driveway, low wires)
- Moving the container to another spot once it's down
- Overfilled loads that have to be leveled before hauling
- Permit fees, if the container sits on a public street
Timing
Demand rises after storms and during the busy months for home projects. If your dates are flexible, say so: some companies have more room mid-week. Booking a little ahead gives you more choice of size.
Comparing quotes
Ask each company the same four questions: how many days, how many tons, what's not allowed, and what the extra day and extra ton cost. Write the answers side by side. The quote that looks smallest at first isn't always the one that costs least by the end. The size guide helps you avoid paying for a second haul.
