10yard
Small and heavy jobs
Often about 12 to 14 ft long, 7 to 8 ft wide, 3 to 4 ft tall
One bathroom gut, a small shed, or a load of concrete, pavers or dirt. Low walls make heavy loading easier.
Sizes
The number on a roll-off is its volume in cubic yards. Five sizes cover almost every home project. Dimensions and weight allowances vary from one company to the next, and the company confirms them when you call.

15yard
Often about 14 to 16 ft long, 7 to 8 ft wide, 4 to 5 ft tall
A one or two-car garage, a modest kitchen, or a single-layer shingle roof on a smaller home.
20yard
Typically about 20 to 22 ft long, 7 to 8 ft wide, 4 to 5 ft tall
Flooring for a whole house, a full kitchen remodel, a big garage and attic clear-out.
30yard
Typically about 20 to 22 ft long, 7 to 8 ft wide, around 6 ft tall
A full estate or move-out, a large addition, or a big brush and hedge removal.
40yard
Typically about 20 to 22 ft long, 7 to 8 ft wide, around 8 ft tall
Large volumes of light debris. The tall walls make hand loading slow, so use the rear door.
Every rental comes with a weight allowance, usually stated in tons. Go over and most companies charge for the extra after the load is weighed at the disposal site.
Light debris like furniture and boxes fills the space first. Heavy debris like shingles, tile, concrete and wet soil reaches the weight allowance first, which is why heavy jobs get smaller containers.

| Material | Usual size | What limits it |
|---|---|---|
| Household junk, furniture | 15 to 30 yard | Space |
| Drywall, cabinets, flooring | 15 to 20 yard | Space, then weight |
| Asphalt shingles | 10 to 20 yard | Weight |
| Concrete, block, pavers, dirt | 10 yard or smaller | Weight |
| Palm fronds and brush | 20 to 30 yard | Space |
The 20, 30 and 40-yard sizes often share a footprint and differ in height, so a bigger size doesn't always need more driveway. The truck that brings it does need straight-line room in front of the spot, plus some extra length.
