Moving out

Dumpster for moving or downsizing

A move is the one time you handle everything you own. A container in the driveway for the last week means the things not worth moving never get packed.

A simple timeline

  1. Three weeks out

Decide what goes with you. Mark the rest: sell, donate, toss.

  2. Two weeks out

Call and book a drop-off date for the week before the movers. Ask how many days are included.

  3. Container week

Toss as you pack. Keep a path clear so the movers' truck can still reach the door.

  4. Moving day or the day after

Schedule pickup once the house is empty, so the last load goes in too.

Cape Coral move-outs need a booking

Cape Coral's collection rules say move-outs aren't part of the standard bulk pickup. They have to be scheduled with the city's hauler, and a fee may apply. If you're leaving a Cape Coral home with a lot of furniture, a rental container is often simpler than stacking it at the road and waiting.

Inside the City of Fort Myers, the weekly bulk pickup tops out at four cubic yards, per the city FAQ.

Condos, villas and HOA rules

Downsizing often means moving into a condo or a villa community. Most have rules about containers in parking areas, and some limit the days. Ask the manager before you book, and get the answer in writing if you can.

If you're the one leaving a condo, the same applies to the building you're moving out of.

What fits

Furniture is bulky and light. A two or three-bedroom home's leftovers often fit a 15 or 20-yard container. Take mattresses apart from frames, and stand sofas on end to save floor space.
