Roofing debris

Dumpster for a roof tear-off

Old roofing is dense. A container that looks half full of shingles can already be at its weight allowance, so the question to settle on the phone is tons, not yards.

Who supplies the container?

Many roofers bring their own and fold the cost into the job. Read your roofing contract before you book. If your roofer isn't hauling the old shingles away, or you're re-roofing a shed or a small addition yourself, a container in the driveway is the tidy way to do it.

Shingle, tile or metal

Tell the company what's coming off, because it changes the size they suggest:

  • Asphalt shingles. One layer on a typical one-story home often fits a 10 or 15-yard container by weight. Two layers can double the tonnage.
  • Concrete or clay tile. Much heavier than shingles. Expect a smaller container, or more than one haul.
  • Metal panels. Light but long. A longer container matters more than tonnage.

Wet underlayment and plywood decking add weight too. After an afternoon storm, a tarp over the load keeps rain out of the count.

Where old shingles end up

Lee County's Buckingham campus no longer accepts asphalt shingles. The county sends them to the Lee/Hendry landfill or to approved private construction and demolition companies. The rental company handles that run, but it's part of why roofing loads are priced differently from household junk.

Keep shingles separate from other trash if the company asks for a roofing-only load.

Tear-off day, in order

  1. Protect the yard

Lay tarps over shrubs and the lanai screen below the drip edge.

  2. Place the container close

Within reach of a chute or a short toss from the roof edge, on boards.

  3. Load evenly

Spread shingles across the floor rather than piling them at one end.

  4. Stop at the top rail

Nothing above the sides. Overfilled containers can't be hauled.
