Where to put a dumpster

The driver decides the final spot, but your choice of where it should go saves time on delivery day. Walk the driveway with these points in mind before you call.

Protect the driveway

A loaded container presses its weight onto two steel rails and a set of rollers. Pavers can shift and concrete can crack, especially at the edges. Ask the company to set the container on boards, or lay down two sheets of thick plywood yourself where the rails will land.

Fresh sealcoat and newly poured concrete need time to cure. If yours is new, say so.

Look up

The truck lifts its bed steeply to slide the container off, so it needs open space above. Before you pick a spot, check for:

  • Overhead power and cable lines
  • Low palm fronds and oak limbs
  • Roof overhangs and gutters
  • A carport or a garage door left open

Leave room around it

The truck needs a straight run in front of the spot, plus extra length for the container to slide back. Leave space at the rear door so it can swing open for loading heavy items, and keep one car's width clear if anyone still needs to get out.

Things under the ground

Keep containers off septic tanks and drain fields, irrigation heads, water meters and the grass swale by the road, which carries rainwater away in summer storms. If the only space is on the lawn, ask about it on the call. Wet ground in the rainy season may not hold a loaded container.

Neighbors, HOAs and the street

If the container has to go on a street, the permits guide explains who to ask. In an HOA or condo community, check the rules on containers and how long they can stay. A short note to the neighbors on either side is a nice touch.
